Why Visit Northern California? Top 3 Attractions in Northern California

If you're looking for a vacation destination that offers something for everyone, Northern California is the perfect spot. From the cosmopolitan city of San Francisco to the stunning redwoods and wine country in the north, this diverse region has something to offer everyone. Here are their top 3 picks for attractions in Northern California:

1. Golden Gate Bridge

The one-mile-wide strait that connects San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean is known as the Golden Gate and is crossed by the suspension bridge known as the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge carries both U.S. Highway 101 and California State Road 1 across the strait, connecting the American city of San Francisco, California—located at the northernmost point of the San Francisco Peninsula—to Marin County. It is recognized as a component of U.S. Bicycle Route 95 and carries both pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The bridge is one of the most well-known representations of San Francisco and California around the world, having been named one of the Modern World's Wonders by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Engineer Joseph Strauss created the first version of it in 1917. The Golden Gate Strait, which it crosses, inspired the bridge's name.

According to Frommer's travel guide, the Golden Gate Bridge is "perhaps the most magnificent, and undoubtedly the most photographed, bridge in the world." It was the world's longest and highest suspension bridge when it first opened in 1937, holding those distinctions until 1964 and 1998, respectively. Its overall height is 746 feet, and its primary span is 4,200 feet.

HISTORY

The only possible short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County, before the bridge was built, was via boat over a portion of San Francisco Bay.  As early as 1820, a ferry service was set up so that San Francisco could get water. Regular service began in the 1840s.

The Sausalito Land and Ferry Company service began in 1867. By the 1920s, it had changed into the Golden Gate Ferry Company, which was part of the Southern Pacific Railroad and was the largest ferry company in the world. The Southern Pacific's car ferries, which used to only be for railroad customers and passengers, became very popular and important to the local economy. It took 27 minutes to get there from the San Francisco Ferry Building.

Numerous people wanted to construct a bridge to link Marin County with San Francisco. San Francisco was the largest American city that was still primarily served by ferry boats. The city's growth rate was lower than the national average since it lacked a long-term connection to the bayside settlements. Many experts opined that a bridge could not be constructed across the 6,700-foot strait due to its regular severe winds, violent, whirling currents, and 372 feet of water at its center. Construction and operation would be hindered, according to experts, by strong winds and blinding fogs.

2. The Mystery Spot

George Prather founded The Mysterious Place in 1939 as a tourist destination close to Santa Cruz, California. On the short, steep ascent to the top of the hill and inside a wooden structure on the property, visitors can witness displays that seem to defy gravity. The Mystery Place is a well-liked tourist destination that became famous for being a "gravity box" or "tilted house" by the side of the road. A gravity hill was the first of its kind to be constructed in California at this location.

HISTORY

George Prather opened The Mysterious Spot in 1939. Prior to founding the Mystery Spot, Prather worked as an inventor, mechanic, and electrician. He went to Santa Cruz in 1920 after being born close to Fresno. Before opening the mystery spot, he ran a repair shop and welding company nearby. The Mystery Spot was a roadside attraction that opened for new car owners after World War II and was highlighted on Art Baker's television program, You Asked for It.

Prather was inspired to start the site by how popular the Oregon Vortex was when it opened to the public in 1930.According to a newspaper article, Prather bought three acres on the hill in 1940 after becoming curious about his mild vertigo while out walking. The article also said that as he explored his land more, he noticed that his compass was shaking. In June 1941, he constructed a "crazy house" and invited visitors to the location. Visitors are guided through the attraction by tour operators, who also put on numerous demonstrations to highlight the site's peculiar effects.

When Prather died in January 1946, his son Bruce took over management of the Mystery Spot together with his father's business partner, Vaden McCray. Life magazine took pictures of the McCray family for a spread on the Mystery Place in their edition from November 15, 1948. Bruce Prather passed away in 2015, and McCray died in 2001. The property is currently owned by Christopher Smith.

In July 2014, the Mystery Place was put forward as a possible California Historical Landmark. In August 2014, it was named California Historical Landmark #1055.

3. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is a breathtakingly beautiful park located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, USA. It is renowned for its stunning granite cliffs, waterfalls, crystal clear streams, and of course, its ancient sequoia trees.

Tunnel View is one of the most popular viewpoints in the park, offering visitors a stunning panorama of Bridalveil Fall, El Capitan, and Half Dome. Visitors can also explore Yosemite Village, which offers a range of amenities including shops, restaurants, and lodging.

The Yosemite Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history and culture of the area. The museum features exhibits on the Native American tribes that have inhabited the region for thousands of years, as well as displays on the park's flora and fauna.

The Ansel Adams Gallery is another popular attraction in Yosemite Village, showcasing the work of the famous photographer who was known for his stunning black-and-white landscapes of the area. Visitors can purchase prints of Adams' work or take part in photography workshops to improve their own skills.

Overall, Yosemite National Park is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves the great outdoors and wants to experience the natural beauty of California's Sierra Nevada mountains.
